Triassic dolomites occur pervasively in the Western Sichuan Basin. Although these strata have been deeply buried and affected by multiple phases of dolomitization and dissolution, some intervals in the upper part of the Leikoupo Formation have developed high porosity. Based on their petrographic and geochemical features, three major types of dolomite fabrics are recognized, namely, dolomicrite Author: Shunli Zhang, Zhengxiang Lv, Yi Wen, Sibing Liu. The text book "Carbonate Reservoirs" was prepared by Drs. Moore and Wade specifically to accompany this course and is furnished to all course participants. Related terms [ edit ]. Early diagenetic dolomitization is a common feature in cyclic shallow-water carbonates throughout the geologic record. After their generation, dolomites may be subject to dedolomitization (re-calcification of dolomites), e.g. by contact with meteoric water during emersion. The purpose of that symposium was to express the state-of-the-art of the study of the elusive process(es) of dolomitization.

This paper reviews work that seeks to provide a quantitative framework for conceptual models of dolomitization, using analytical and, particularly, numerical simulation models of fluid flow and.

One of the most Concepts and models of Dolomitization book and widely used dolomitization models during the 70's and 80's was the mixed meteoric-marine model, more commonly termed the mixing zone or Dorag model (Badiozamani, ; Land, ; Morse and Mackenzie, ; Purser et al., ).

This model was commonly applied to ancient dolomitized sequences that were thought to. Dolomitization. by Land, L.S.

The dolomite mineral grains often show distinct faces. Dolomitization is a geological process by which the carbonate mineral dolomite is formed when magnesium ions replace calcium ions in another carbonate mineral, is common for this mineral alteration into dolomite to take place due to evaporation of water in the sabkha area.

Dolomitization involves substantial amount of recrystallization. This process is described by the. Dolomite, CaCO 3 MgCO 3, is a common mineral, usually found with limestone (CaCO 3).The rock, consisting principally of the mineral dolomite, is also called dolomite; more recently it has come to be called process of the formation of the mineral and rock is referred to as dolomitization.

Dolostones are alsocalled dolomites, especially in the literature prior to aboutbut the term dolomites should be used only for This is a preview of subscription content, log in to check access.

Geochemical reaction modeling plays an increasingly vital role in several areas of geoscience, from environmental geochemistry and petroleum geology to the study of geothermal and hydrothermal fluids. This book provides an up-to-date overview of the use of numerical methods to model reaction processes in the Earth's crust and on its surface.

Two key overview papers are 1) a lengthy historical and "critical reappraisal" of concepts and models of dolomitization by Hans Machel, and 2) the methodology of going "from conceptual to numerical models" of dolomitization by Whitaker, Smart, and Jones from Bristol University.

Lynton Land presents and describes the various models for dolomitization, and examples are offered. The mineralogy, geochemistry, and petrology of dolomite is introduced and summarized as pertaining to the timing and mechanisms of dolomitization. This talk (2 hours, 40 minutes) was part of the AAPG.

Dolomitization definition: the process or act of turning into dolomite | Meaning, pronunciation, translations and examples. Existing models for dolomitization emphasize that penecontemporaneous dolomitization can occur in both subtidal and supratidal environments if the necessary chemical and physical factors favorable for the development of magnesium-rich hypersaline waters exist.

Holocene shallow-water hypersaline environments that have the potential to produce dolomite without deposition of more soluble Cited by: Conceptual models for burrow‐related, selective dolomitization with textural and isotopic evidence from the Tyndall Stone, Canada.

Murray K. Gingras. Corresponding Author. Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2E3, Canada. Dolomitization definition is - the process of converting into dolomite. dolomitization[‚dōləmədə′zāshən] (geology) Conversion of limestone to dolomite rock by replacing a portion of the calcium carbonate with magnesium carbonate.

Dolomitization the process of enriching calcareous silt (sediment) or limestone with dolomite through the substitution of MgCO3 for part of the CaCO3. There are two types of. Dolomitization, for instance, can occur in diagenetic halos several millimetres in thickness around and within the burrows.

An excellent example of this is the Ordovician Tyndall Stone of the Red River Group in Manitoba, Canada: Tyndall Stone is discussed in detail below. Many models exist for the large-scale processes required to. The geochemical process in supratidal sabkha areas where magnesium [Mg] ions from the evaporation of seawater replace calcium [Ca] ions in calcite, forming the mineral volume of dolomite is less than that of calcite, so the replacement of calcite by dolomite in a rock increases the pore space in the rock by 13% and forms an important reservoir rock.

The Dorag Dolomitization Model--Application to the Middle Ordovician of Wisconsin. Khosrow Badiozamani (3) ABSTRACT.

Most current models of dolomitization are incapable of explaining the genesis of dolostones that lack evidence of supratidal origin and are not associated with evaporites. Models of Dolomitization • All models must explain: 1.

Source of Mg2+ • Generally seawater is assumed, meteoric waters have very low Mg concentrations (Low Mg calcite) • Transformation of smectiteclays to illiticclays during burial releases Mg2+ • Formation water brines ‐highly variable mineralogy 2.

Abundant well cores taken from the T 1 f 3 of the Jiannan area contain carbonates in varying degrees of dolomitization, which provide us a good opportunity to observe and investigate the dolomitization process and associated fabric and texture evolution in each stage of dolomitization process, and to further evaluate their implications for Cited by: Concepts and Models of Dolomitization, Donald H.

In the present paper, we examine the influence of micrite types, autochthonous or allochthonous, on the dolomitization processes. The recrystallized and dolomitized Carnian samples from Rifugio Vallandro and Alpe di Specie erratic boulders (South Tyrol, Italy) offer a unique example for studying the relationship between microbialites and dolomitization by: 1.

Case histories illustrating these concepts and models are presented for each major diagenetic environment and line drawings illustrate the book. Petrographic characteristics of porosity and diagenetic fabrics and textures are illustrated using numerous photomicrographs taken specifically for the book by the author.

dolomitization along the Wisconsin arch—A case for hydrothermal diagenesis John A. Luczaj ABSTRACT Ordovician carbonates near the Wisconsin arch represent the type locality in ancient rocks for the Dorag, or mixing-zone, model for ,petrographic, and geochemical evidence sug.

Carbonate sediments tend to show a ribbon-like geometry and are less commonly developed as widespread sheets.

Examples of both geometries are shown by two of the major carbonate reservoir intervals in the Middle East. Sediments of the Permian–Triassic Khuff Formation were deposited on a very low relief shelf, sheltered from the open ocean by a barrier reef.

Dolomitization: A Critical View of some Current Views: PERSPECTIVES. Lawrence A. Hardie. ABSTRACT. The principal models in vogue today for dolomitization are the mixing zone and the sabkha models. Despite the wide acceptance of these models, there.

No. However on occasion if the recrystallization is coarser it can lead to improved permeability. Porosity is the presence of interconnected pore spaces. Permeability is how the porosity is interconnected.
